Celebrate World Town Planning Day Today!
8 November 2018
Alix De Nercy
World Town Planning Day is celebrated on 8 November each year. It is a celebration of how we shape the places where we live, work and play. Founded by Argentinian Carlos Maria della Paolera in 1949, World Town Planning Day was intended as a special day to recognise and promote the role of planning globally.
This year’s theme is Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities– one of the 17 Global Goals of the United Nations – "…Making cities safe and sustainable means ensuring access to safe and affordable housing, and upgrading slum settlements. It also involves investment in public transport, creating green public spaces, and improving urban planning and management in a way that is both participatory andinclusive”.
To celebrate progress towards more inclusivity in the built environment, Women in Planning London would like to share two (2) of our favourite international examples of #SDG11 in action:
#SDG11femalepionner – Vere Shaba, Green Building Innovator and Founder of Shaba & Ramplin Green Building Solutions. At 29 years-old she owns and manages the only company in South Africa that uses the 'Integrated GreenDesign' approach in engineering. Shaba & Ramplin Green Building Solutions is a multi-disciplinary consulting firm specialising in engineering, green buildings and interior services that facilitate energy-efficient solutions for the built environment industry. "As part of Africa’s natural growth path, we recognise the need for construction across the continent, but we also realise that we need a sustainable way to integrate this with the natural environment" (Vere Shaba)
#SDG11achievement – publication of the pilot City Life Survey in Myanmar. This is Myanmar's first multiple city survey that has an equal representation of men and women respondents. Findings of this survey will be used to re-define urban planning to better respond to the way women experience cities in Myanmar.
Share with us your best #SDG11femalepionneer and #SDG11achievement of 2018!
